Snupin 2008

Posted on 2008.08.25 at 21:19
Whew! I was given a toughy for the Snupin Santa gift exchange. I'm gonna have to get cracking because this one I can't let slide.

I noticed I hadn't updated this journal in exactly a year. I do still read fics but not nearly what I used to. And I'm almost always at IJ now.

Democratic convention anyone? Kennedy's speach was pretty great.

Everything seems to be going right today. I woke up early (for me), got to relax at my favorite coffee shop, my room mate cleaned the garage. Amazing! And my dog, who was hit by a car 2 weeks ago, was given the green light by the vet to romp and be a dog again. (He was on leash restriction for quite long enough, in his opinion.)

I rode my bike to the theatre this evening and the ride was beautiful, I live in a great town. The parks were green and flowery, the river was sparkly and the weather was loverly.

And to top it off, I loved the movie! Easily the best one, in my opinion. The actor I'm not in love with, who plays my favorite character, had just the right amount of screen time. (I have given my opinion on this once, if anyone recalls.) The acting throughout, was not nearly as terrible as in the past, in fact, Umbridge and Luna were terrific.

I'll leave it at that, as I'm sure this has been talked to death already. I'll go hug my doggie now and watch some tv.

Cheers, Rosemont

You scored as Remus Lupin. You are a wise and caring wizard and a good, loyal friend to boot. However sometimes in an effort to be liked by others you can let things slide by, which ordinarily you would protest about.

Wow, After the whole Thewlis thing and the excitement of that topic I am resolved to watch PoA again this weekend. I will either see things differently or be reminded why I felt the way I did in the first place. A little of both most likely.
I did try to rent Divorcing Jack tonight but it is not to be found in my town. Oh Well.

looking for a remus/severus/sirius recommendation

Can people give me some recommendations for the threesome of Remus/Severus/Sirius? I'll take as many as I can get. Are there any communities or references for this threesome?

Bookworm Meme:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.

From Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Literally open in front of me when I read Ellid's post, I swear.

Dagny Taggert observing Francisco D'Anconia

She noticed the way he fingered the marbles in his hand. He was not conscious of it, he was looking off into some grim distance, but she felt certain that the action was a relief to him, perhaps in contrast. His fingers were moving slowly, feeling the texture of the stones with a sensual enjoyment.

Beta Search

I have just completed my Snupin Santa story and would love a Beta. I would appreciate feedback on any aspect of the story from content to grammar and punctuation to "you know, maybe you should just stick to reading stories."
I have never had a Beta before so please let me know how to proceed. I do realize there is not a lot of time until the 10th YIKES. The story is about 250k and 22,000 words but a lot of dialogue so pretty easy. Thank you in advance.

How do you solicit a Beta?

I saved a post with a great list of Beta's but how do I solicit one? I suppose I could, for one, make a post to my f-list and just ask. But no, that would just seem too ignorant. So then maybe I just contact people individually from the list? Only who? What, when? I don't have a clue as to the etiquette. I don't even know how to spell it.

So then I panic and think forget it, forget it, forget it, I'll edit it myself despite my frighteningly poor handle on grammar and punctuation. Or because of my frighteningly poor handle on grammar and punctuation because I am most embarrassed and anxious about having someone read my story with a critical eye. Whew! Was that a run-on? I don't even know.

And then there is the story content itself. Lordy.

So I ask myself, what is more embarrassing? Asking for a Beta and possibly learning a great deal and significantly improving my Snupin Santa gift or posting an un-Beta'd story for everyone to stumble through?

Hmmmm. I'll have to think on it.

Cheers to any input or advice,
Rosemont

I'm finding it very uncomfortable to read fic now that I'm in the middle of writing one. I am afraid of running across and idea the I've already had and now can't use or worse being influenced too much.
I remember Don Henley once said he never listened to other people's songs for fear of being influenced. That is crap of course and I don't believe it for an second. But now I understand the fear.
This is such a narrow genre it is hard to stay fresh. I'll just do my bestest.

Fun Feedback

I received the funniest review today at Wolfsbane. And I quote, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remus and Snape. I think I got onto the wrong site. Some advice for you : READ HBP."

I just laughed out loud imagining the shock of this poor unsuspecting reader. It was labeled Slash, so I don't feel too bad.

What's the funniest or strangest review you've ever received??

Cheers,

My HBP Experience--NO SPOILERS ARE CONTAINED HERIN

I happily arrive home on Sunday, July 17th from a camping trip greatly anticipating spending the rest of my evening with HARRY POTTER, et al. YAY! I had told my room-mate, "You may open the package and read the book but when I'm home Sunday, ya better hand it over." He read in in under 24 hours, good boy!

Camping gear everywhere, not bothering to unpack, I am soon immersed in Potterverse (with a pint of Ben and Jerry's) and I blissfully forget that this is the most popular and most anticipated Book in the world right now. This book is written only for me. I am alone with these characters, it is private and they are mine to discover! I finish it too quickly and am now bereft of their company.

So I rejoin society, visit my f-list, and my illusions are immediately shattered. There is no doubt that Harry Potter is for the masses, my privacy has been rudely intruded upon. Alas, it was not written just for me. These characters are not mine alone and their lives are so horribly public I feel vicariously exposed.

And so I retreat from the f-list, I do not turn on the tv or listen to the radio, I read no fanfic and I keep my thoughts about the book private. I am trying so hard to retain for just a little longer the illusion that the stories belong to me. Untouched in my head and in my heart where no one else can tarnish them with...OPINIONS!!

Mint Julep

I have a new favourite drink. Mint Julep. I am from the Northwest, born and bred, thus have no business attempting this drink according to many. There is some high controversy surrounding the Mint Julep, which of course just makes me want to find out all about it. I am a whiskey drinker, a fine scotch connoissuer and by Goddess I will learn to make the perfect Mint Julep as well!

SO I did my research and picked a recipe that didn't involve steeping over night, (it is Friday after all and I need my drink NOW!) It is GOOOOD. I'm am sorry, but if my first attempt created this beautiful concoction then what is all the fuss about? Mint-sugar-good Bourbon-finely crushed ice. Blammo! A Minty Buzz!

Southerners I need to Know!! Any Opinions??

Cheers. (My first public post by the way. All it took was a minty-buzz.)

SO since my last update I have not finished Mother Night, I've done another time trial and still suck, have not planted pepper seeds as I forgot all about them until I re-read the last entry and I have not written anything.

I have a slight buzz from an Old Fashioned which I am quite enjoying. I just at an entire pint of ice cream, not good but very good. I think I'll brush my teeth and got to bed now.
